The house will be opening September 11. More information will be posted soon.
We will encourage and challenge each woman for at least one full year, while offering a safe living environment, employment, and an array of life skills workshops. We will walk with each woman, into self-understanding and self-sufficiency, so that she can be the successful person she was created to be. SISTER House’s goal is to be entirely self-sufficient. We aim to do this by owning businesses that will generate the income needed to sustain our operations while enhancing each woman’s job and life skills. While continuing to strive toward our larger vision, we are sponsoring Wisconsin’s first Oxford House for women -- Madison Place Oxford House. The house accommodates up to six women and opens in September. More information about Madison Place Oxford House will be posted soon. We are raising seed money in order to start our own housing and business operations. SISTER House is a 501 (c) (3) organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Read more about how you can help. Currently, there are about 1,200 women imprisoned in Wisconsin. There are additional women in jail or in short-term treatment programs (in lieu of incarceration) or in post-incarceration programs. In 2010, at least 400 of these women will return to Wisconsin communities. Most of the women will return without the education, employment history, and life-skills necessary to successfully reintegrate into society. SISTER House is needed to provide a real place with real opportunities for returning women. Read more about why SISTER House is needed. SISTER House’s vision differs from other Madison-area organizations and programs in that it is more than a program. We will offer a long-term and holistic experience. Each woman will be allowed to truly "get on her feet" and "practice" new life skills before she is "on her own." Also, as stated above SISTER House’s goal is to be entirely self-sufficient. We aim to do this by operating one or more of our own businesses. Read more about how SISTER House is different. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, fathers, sons, and brothers striving for the betterment of our community. We all have long histories of working to improve our communities through our employment and volunteer experiences. Three of us have spent time in prison or jail. Several of us are in recovery and/or have loved ones in recovery. |
